An entry in Tablet Hotel’s Rethink Hotels competition, the Allotment is a totally new concept in hospitality: A hotel centered around food, rather than sleep. Dreamed up by Dean Moran, the prospective NYC hotel is all about the process of growing, selling and cooking fresh food, while also giving guests the opportunity to engage in the process. The proposal also calls for cultivating farm fresh produce in and on the hotel itself!
Tablet sourced ideas for the competition using Jovoto, a Berlin-based crowd-sourcing platform, and Moran’s complete entry can be seen there. The hotel’s food-centric mission would be carried out via four components: the Allotment Market, an indoor farmer’s market where local food growers (all within 100 miles of NYC) would sell food to the public and to the hotel’s restaurant; the Allotment Restaurant itself, where diners would be able to bring their own fresh ingredients and watch them be prepared in the open kitchen; a base for New York Good Food Tours, a walking tour company; and finally the Allotment Rooftop garden, where locals can do a little gardening, maybe even take a class, and get drinks at the bar while lounging in the lush, green atmosphere overlooking the city.
Our readers from the UK will be a little ahead of the rest of us when it comes to the name and the concept for the hotel: there, an allotment garden is a large plot of land divided into small plots, each one designated for a city-dwelling household to use for growing their own vegetables and flowers. What a lovely idea to apply to a New York City hotel!
