Gallery: The Artist’s Retreat is a Sustainable Solar-Powered Summer Get...

This modern summer retreat in Water Mill, NY was built for an artist and her mother as an escape from the city. Designed by Resolution: 4 Architecture, the home was prefabricated to minimize waste and impact on the site. The Artist's Retreat also makes use of geothermal heating and cooling and is topped off with an impressive 9 kW photovoltaic system that generates electricity for use in the home and to sell back to the grid.

The Artist’s Retreat is a 2,550 sf sustainable summer escape with 3 bedrooms and 3 baths in Water Mill, NY. As the home is used by an artist and her mother, it was designed to provide separate spaces for each person as well as shared common spaces. A rooftop deck provides a lovely perch frpm which to enjoy the surrounding landscape and a shady pergola keeps the temperatures under control.

To minimize the impact of the new home, Resolution: 4 Architecture settled on prefabricated modular construction. This significantly reduced material waste and improved the quality of construction. Energy-efficient geothermal heating and cooling reduces energy use by 25-50%. One of the rooftops is covered in a large photovoltaic system totaling up to 9 kW of power. When the system produces more than what is used by the house, electricity is fed back onto the grid through a local buy back program. Skylights and glazing infuse the interior with natural daylight. Finally, the retreat features low-e windows, bamboo flooring and Caesarstone countertops.
