The cute East Village one stop shop, Sustainable NYC, has just won the Green America People’s Choice Award for Best Green Business. The general store meets boutique meets café has been providing sustainable goods and great fair trade coffee to East Villagers over the last four years. Upon receiving the award, Sustainable NYC has also announced their plan to expand.

The Avenue A shop’s sustainability starts from the ground up, being built from 300 year old reclaimed lumber from New York City buildings. The interior is decorated with eco-friendly wallpaper and paint, and the furniture and fixtures are not only recycled but for sale! Even the outdoor sign is powered with sustainable solar energy.

The shop offers a slew of organic wares including natural beauty products, biodegradable cleaning products, baby goods, clothing, cards, jewelry, solar gadgets, fair trade foods and plentiful eco-conscious gifts. They operate under an eco-conscious policy as well, employing extensive recycling (including giving away boxes they collect for moving), utilize wind power, carbon offsets and solar power.

The national award spurred owner Dominique Camacho to consider expansion, with possible plans for creating a franchise model to soon be underway.
