While the forecast last weekend called for rain, rain and more rain, hordes of New Yorkers (many in exotic garb ranging from butterfly wings to tutus) trekked it out to
Governor's Island for the annual independent art festival known as
FIGMENT. We took a tour to explore the wildly imaginative (and in most cases, recycled) art that popped up amidst the trees and historic sites of the island. From saran wrap sculptures to salvaged material treehouses, click through our gallery to see the sights we did!
Plastic Fantastic by Diedra Krieger is a 16 foot buckyball-esque geodesic dome made using over 6,000 recycled water bottles. Some of the bottles had colorful messages inside of them from passersby who participated in making the dome by popping their water bottles into it.
Artist Theresa Galeani blazed a trail of yarn and recycled fabrics with her installation entitled “Optimism.” Crocheted chains were draped across a patch of trees on the island, leading passersby to follow them and see where they led.
