Gallery: The NEW New York Block Party Celebrates Green Design Today!

Get ready, design geeks. The NEW New York block party is happening TODAY! The festival, now in its second year, is a green street festival hosted by GreenHomeNYC that celebrates sustainable building and green design. Basically, a little slice of heaven on Earth. The interactive festival will be a hands-on experience focused on teaching New Yorkers how to green their built environment, with programming integrated into the surrounding North Brooklyn neighborhood. From learning how to build a green roof to outdoor yoga classes to a lounge filled with eco furniture, the October 1st block party has something for everyone.

The NEW New York will take place this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on N. 11th Street between Wythe and Berry Streets in front of the Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg (some events, like the yoga classes, will begin before the festival, so check the schedule). In addition to having the opportunity to learn about building green roofs, you’ll also be able to practice composting with worms, browse vintage fashions, learn how to capture and reuse rainwater, relax on green furniture designed by NYC students, and get more information about local green businesses like home composting company Vokashi and kitchen designers Pure Kitchen. Kids can join in the fun with solar car building and making jewelry from recycled bike parts with Recycle-A-Bicycle. When you get hungry, you can purchase tasty local snacks from The V-spot, Runa Tea, Think Coffee, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Truck, and more.

One of the coolest components of the party will no doubt be GreenHomeNYC’s lounge, outfitted with newly made eco furniture from New York City students. If you recall, GreenHomeNYC called for submissions of designs this summer, then a panel of experts worked with students to make their designs become a reality using materials from Film Biz Recycling and Build It Green! NYC.

The Block Party will also have drop-off locations for electronic waste, and Recycle-A-Bicycle will be collecting old bicycles. Special tours of green buildings, including a passive house (possibly Loadingdock5′s?) will be given, Made in Brooklyn Tours will be hosting their ‘Look Who’s Makin it Green’ in Brooklyn tour of local green businesses. Local microfinance organization, ioby, plus AeonSolar and EnergyHub will be included on the tour.

Even the event’s operations are green — an impressive feat for a street fair. Following GreenHomeNYC’s Green Street Festival Guidelines, the block party will compost, reduce the use of paper, and offset its carbon footprint. Specially divided trash cans make it easy for guests to separate recycling and food waste.

If your green interests can’t be satiated by six hours of a street fair, there will be an after party at Brooklyn Bowl — a LEED certified building! — from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. (tickets $15 adv, $20 at door) with screening of the film Truck Farm and food trucks Coolhaus and Eddie’s Pizza.
