The People’s Recovery is a 3-day summit in February that invites New Yorkers to learn about and support equitable and sustainable rebuilding efforts in Hurricane Sandy-affected communities. From Friday to Sunday (Feb 1st-3rd), attendees will gather for workshops, training sessions, speakers, concerts and community dinners to discuss strategies for moving towards a greener post-Sandy NYC. The objectives and outcomes of the People’s Recovery Summit include connecting the dots between residents and advocates, building better relationships between organizations to foster a stronger, multi-tiered rebuilding processes, and the unveiling of a Sandy report with policy suggestions for equitable and accountable development. The summit will hold a focus on human rights, transparency and participation in order to make sure those affected by October’s storm do not fall prey to disaster capitalism.

The growing list of speakers includes representatives of local nonprofits focused on social justice, community organizers, and various political writers and a list of performers can be found here. Registration for the conference is only $10 for students, elders and the unemployed, and $20 dollars for all others. A $50 dollar pass, which includes access to all evening concerts and performances, is also available. Scholarships will also be available based on need. The summit will take place at the Church of St. Luke & St. Matthew in Brooklyn, NYC, and all proceeds from the summit will go towards building and sustaining the grassroots, people-powered recovery network.
