Head down to historic South Street Seaport and Peck Slip to The New Amsterdam Market today for culinary treats for A Taste of Marcellus. Visitors are invited to enjoy a feast of local foods from the Marcellus Shale region that is threatened by horizontal hydrofracking. Chefs will be on hand until 4 p.m. to answer questions about the food and where it comes from, and there will be educational information provided about the dangers of fracking.
New York State is currently proposing hydrofracking for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale region. Local farmers fear the side effects that the highly invasive, industrialized drilling process would have on food and water. The region runs along the southern border of New York State, touching parts of Pennsylvania. The area is rich with fresh water and fertile land that supports farming, vineyards, dairy and livestock farms and breweries. They fear that fracking will ruin their lush farm land, leaving it useless once the natural gas has been removed.
On Sunday, New York City chefs will be preparing the bounties from Marcellus, including maple bacon sticky buns by the chef of Print Restaurant, braised Piggery pork with Cayuga turtle beans and Trumansburg pickles from Jimmy’s #43, and artisan ice cream from Early Bird Cookery.
The Taste of Marcellus takes place today, Sunday, September 25 from 11am- 4pm.
