Throw your suit in a messenger bag and strap on your helmet because today is Bike to Work Day ! Thousands of New Yorkers will be trading in their car, bus or subway commutes for a zero-energy alternative that is also a blast – and it’s not too late to join in on the fun! Bikers still have until 10 am to take advantage of one of several fueling stations greeting bicyclists this morning. So pick up a coffee, a coconut water or a snack and ride into the sunset (or into the office, since they’re probably expecting you). Click through to find out where you can score a bit of grub and reflective decals on your way to work (and perhaps even get an invite to a super cool after-work bike party).
Residents can meet up with fellow bike commuters this morning at seven local hotspots throughout the city, thanks to local bicycling organization Transportation Alternatives : Brooklyn Bridge; Manhattan Bridge; Joyce Kilmer Park; Williamsburg Bridge; Queensboro Bridge; Staten Island Ferry; and Hudson River Greenway. Free libations are being provided by Brooklyn Roasting Company and Vita Coco as well as treats from KIND and Cabot cheese. Passersby will also have an opportunity to become Transportation Alternatives members and get free bike lights and reflective decals.
Bike to Work Day was originally spearheaded by the League of American Bicyclists (yes, these people do exist) in 1956, and is now a national movement with several cities pushing residents each year to get out and get active. Not only is biking to work good for the environment, it’s also a healthy way to get active and get in tune with the city. There will even be a Bike Home from Work Party featuring a reflective light fashion show, a photo booth and a live screen printing that makes today even more epic.
If you still don’t have a bike, you might miss out on today’s fun, but you’ll still be able to join in on the bike to work movement once the Citi Bike share program makes its debut on May 27th. Sign up here for a membership if you haven’t already.
