Last week, we reported that Staten Island’s Freshkills Park may be delayed due to a possible sinking foundation under the recreation fields. Well, the good news is that the fields are not sinking. The bad news is that the park still won’t open for another two years. The New York Times talked to Donald Gangichiodo, owner of the park’s contracting company, who said that the information about a sinking foundation was “only a thought our surveyors had.”

The foundation in question is under an area called Owl Hollow Fields, which will host sports fields. And while they are not sinking, Gangichiodo told the Times that because of other unspecified delays the fields still won’t be ready for about another two years. City officials previously said that Owl Hollow would open this December. Construction is currently stalled at the fields, but it is continuing in other parts of the park.

The Times’ report also revealed that some people, including a Staten Island councilman, are not pleased with the park’s name, which comes directly from the landfill it is replacing. “Freshkills Park?” said the councilman, Vincent Ignizio. “It sounds like where the Manson family goes for their recreational activities.

Ignizio suggests changing the name to Phoenix Park. “This is something rising from the ashes,” he explained. “We need to leave that putrid history where it belongs, in the past.”
