The Upper West Side recently got a new BigBelly Solar trash [2] at the corner of West 77th and Columbus Avenue. It’s the first solar-powered trash can on the Upper West Side [3] and chances are that it won’t be the last, as the City Council has already begun gathering public funds to install more like it in the neighborhood this year.

BigBelly Solar trash cans use solar power to compact garbage in order to reduce the need for pick-up. With a population as large as NY’s, trash [5] becomes a noticeable hazard in areas of the city and these solar-powered wonders are known to have the capacity to compress up to 150 gallons of it to keep the streets cleaner.

BigBelly trash cans can cost around $3000, and the BigBelly at West 77th and Columbus is sponsored by the neighborhood’s Shake Shack [6]. Barbara Adler, of the Columbus Avenue BID, stated that the Shake Shack “has overwhelmed the garbage cans on their corner and across the street” and that the BigBelly will help alleviate this problem.
