VIDEO: Dramatic Con-Ed Station Explosion at Hurricane Sandy’s Peak

Much of Lower Manhattan is still in the dark thanks to the explosion that occurred during Hurricane Sandy at the Con Edison power plant on Avenue C and 14th Street. What many thought was “green lightning” was actually a transformer exploding around 9 p.m. at the peak of Sandy’s rage . Many locals caught the explosion on video, but none that we’ve seen so far were quite as close as this one shared by Gothamist this morning.
Witnesses of the Con-Ed explosion saw blue and green sparks flying from the plant, as the blast echoed in several bursts before burning out. The explosion shut down power for tens of thousands of Con-Ed customers in Manhattan. The surrounding East Village and Lower East side are still without electricity, as is most of Manhattan below 39th Street .
Transmission problems have also caused power loss in parts of Brooklyn and Staten Island, adding to Con Ed’s laundry list of problems to fix. The original estimate for restoration time was five days, but hopeful Con Ed spokespeople now say they hope for a four day timeline.
