An initiative called the White Roof Project is cutting energy costs for buildings across New York City just by changing the color of their roofs. The volunteer-driven organization focuses on low-income residences, coating dark-colored roofs with a special reflective white paint. While the initiative is primarily environmental, it also has financial benefits since cooler buildings mean lower energy costs.
