Sunday marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year [5], and tomorrow New York City’s Chinese population will ring in the year of the Black Water Snake. Although snakes have a somewhat inauspicious symbolism in Western culture, the snake is seen as a symbol of wisdom and is associated with good luck, especially in financial matters. If you’re looking for a place to celebrate the Year of the Black Water Snake this weekend, there’s no shortage of activities in NYC’s five boroughs. Sure, there’s a lot of snow on the ground, but that’s no excuse to just stay in and order Chinese food. From the Chinese New Year parade [6] to the Lunar New Year Dance Sampler [7] in Flushing, get out there and celebrate the Chinese New Year!

The Chinese New Year parade [6] is one of the most colorful cultural events to happen all year in New York City, and it’s a great place to take the whole family. If you’re a shutterbug, it’s also an excellent event to photograph. The parade kicks off at Mott and Hester Streets in Chinatown tomorrow at 1:00 PM.

The parade is the main attraction, but if you want to catch some real fireworks you should show up early. An astounding 500,000 rounds of fireworks will be set off at New York’s New Year Firecracker Ceremony and Cultural Festival [12], which kicks off at 11:00 AM at Sara Roosevelt Park in Chinatown.

Although New York’s Chinatown is located in Manhattan, there’s also plenty of Chinese New Years activity in Queens. With dance performances from China, Korea, Taiwan, India, Egypt, Colombia and America, the Lunar New Year Dance Sampler [15] in Flushing is an annual favorite, and it’s a reminder that the Lunar New Year isn’t just for Chinese people — it’s celebrated by people across Asia and beyond.
