Gallery: Ocean Cleanup Array Turns to Crowd Funding to Raise $80K For F...

Inhabitat recently reported on 19-year-old Boyan Slat’s proposed Ocean Cleanup Array, which the designer believes could potentially remove 7,250,000 tons of plastic from the world’s oceans. The project received a huge amount of media coverage, although scientists and professional ocean activists question the feasibility of the design. Now Slat has turned to crowd-funding website Indiegogo seeking to raise $80,000 for a feasibility study. In the young inventor’s own words, “I don’t know if it’s possible, and that’s exactly the reason I’m doing it.”

Slat’s study would draw upon a team of students, engineers, oceanographers and industry experts to investigate whether his proposed Ocean Cleanup Array would be capable of removing vast amounts of plastic from the oceans.

Slat’s floating array is designed to capture plastic as it circulates through ocean gyres. Slat’s Indiegogo campaign is offering gifts based upon donations – for example, if you donate a $1, you receive a thank you and a digital summary of the study. However those that donate $500 or more will get a social media shout out and their name featured on the pilot vessel.

If you wondering what the $80,000 will go towards, Slat states that it will cover all estimated costs to scientifically prove the concept’s feasibility.”Our research includes 35 research topics in the fields of engineering, oceanography, (geo)physics, ecology, finance, maritime law and recycling.” In addition to pursuing a research budget, Slat adds that “by finishing this all-important study, we can continue with an open ocean pilot, followed by the actual full-scale execution of The Ocean Cleanup.”

As a farm and ranch kid with 6 siblings, now a middle-aged engineer with experience in automotive, aerospace, defense contracting, mining, logging, and food processing industries, old enough to remember nothing but paper grocery bags, drinking cups, and milk and egg cartons, and having worked with PhDs from all over the world, including one named Osama, I cannot comprehend how so many of you ‘concerned’ citizens seem to be so clueless of both cause of problems and the solutions. By 1970, the Baby Boom was over in ALL of the nations of advanced CULTURE, including China, and the population for 1/2 of the world flatlined, meanwhile, the other half of the world exploded and the global population soared from 3 billion to 7.3 billion, projected to be 8.0 billion near 2025. People are the cause of ALL pollution, and, fewer people is PART of the solution. While it may be a brutal lesson for them to learn, those stone-aged CULTURES puking billions more stone-aged rat-brains need to be restricted to the world their insane-populations now so adversely affect, and made to suffer the consequences of their insanity – living in the sesspools they alone are creating. Meanwhile, this nonsense that logging and paper bags, cartons, drinking cups and the like destroys the forest MUST be corrected – trees grow back and logging provides much the same beneficial affects for wildlife as does forest fires. Furthermore, stop this BS that ‘profitability’ is the only deciding factor for policy, law, and other such matters – if not for the EPA getting established in the USA circa 1970, these ‘capitalists’ would have obliterated the entire planet by now, without question. Laws were developed and fines were delivered – yet the planet continued its rotation and intelligent civilizations flourished. You all better find some real brains out there – otherwise – you have no chance whatsoever.

It isn’t feasible, based on a total misunderstanding of the actual problem they are trying to fix. There, I just saved the environmental movement 80,000$. (Hah just kidding nobody will listen)

I would contribute to the development of such a device.
