The taxi light is recognizable in great cities around the world, and now designer Guilhem de Castelbajac has immortalized the iconic item with his series of repurposed LED lamps, “Off Duty No More.” Made from an international array of recycled cab-toppers, the lamps caught our eye at this year’s ICFF.
Each of the lamps have been sourced from iconic, retired cabs of New York, Paris and other cities. As the taxis of each city become updated, these signs are left for the junkyard.
Off Duty No More’s lamps repurpose these discarded vintage plastic fixtures, and retrofit them with energy efficient LED lights. Each lamp has eight different settings, and sits on a metal base which echoes the automobiles they were once perched on. Because each sign is different, each lamp is unique and numbered in limited editions.
Off Duty No More’s iconic taxi lamps give new life to the ill-fated taxi sign, and give owners a little retribution for each taxi who has blown them off in the past.
