Back in April we announced the One Good Chair Design Competition, where a $4500 challenge was set to design a chair that ‘Does Good, Feels Good, Looks Good’. Designs for this competition were judged on their environmental impact, ergonomics and aesthetics, and our own Editor-in-Chief Jill Fehrenbacher was one of the judges for the competition. Well, now the results of the One Good Chair Competition are in! The best chairs in the competition ship and stack easily and are made of renewable and biodegradable materials that minimize waste – one honorable mention even encourages people to ride the bus. Over 300 designers competed in this competition, and in the end the judges couldn’t pick a favorite between the top two. Check out the winners below the jump!

Posi+ive Lounge Chair
Jittasak Narknisorn designed the Posi+ive Lounge Chair with the idea that a design simple enough to be modeled using a piece of paper would be easy to make in an industrial system. The seat is made out of a single piece of bent plywood covered by a cushion of wool felt, resting on a single round steel bar that wraps around the chair to form arm rests.

Pandanus Chair
Jessica Konawicz’s Pandanus Chair is made from a cellulose-based plastic that is biodegradable and can be produced through a low energy manufacturing process. Her inspiration came from the spiraling leaves and colorful fruit of Padanus tree, which lends her design an easily stackable structure and a funky array of colors. The chair is not designed for napping – Jessica hopes sitters will use the Pandanus for “active relaxing.” Congrats to the winners!
