Iceland’s Vigdis Foundation is devoted to the preservation of Icelandic culture and values, and for the foundation’s new headquarters OOIIO Architecture has proposed a dynamic building that will host exhibitions, a theater, a cafe and a library. The architects describe their design as a “rational building,” that will be energy-efficient and eye-catching enough to draw the attention of passing pedestrians.
OOIIO Architecture‘s star-shaped building will contain three different wings. The lower level will be completely open to the public. It has tall ceilings and will host exhibitions, a theater, a café, and a library. the first level would host language classrooms, and the second level would hold Vigdis Foundation administration offices.
The construction process is designed to be efficient and quick, without wasting materials. The structure would be made from sustainably-harvested wood, and the entire building would be clad with modular mirrored glass pieces. This skin would be wrapped in a double façade made from recycled boat ropes, recalling Iceland’s rich nautical heritage.
