I wrote yesterday that our love of Legos may be the strongest proof of our innate desire to build stuff. Here’s an unbelievable tidbit of evidence in support of that theory: YouTube user horseattack made a printer from scratch using nothing but Legos, a felt tip pen and some garage electronics. According to the YouTube page, it prints Helvetica font at 75 dots per inch. As for “felt tip auto-capping,” horseattack says, “Nope, sorry.” For the sheer love of Legos, the printer features worker men on the moving parts so it looks like a busy factory floor. The project is open source, so stay tuned for the specs!
He never posted the plans nor the code on how he did this. That means it is by definition, NOT open source.
Please don’t make that mistake again. While nifty and DIY, it’s just as proprietary as anything Apple, Google, or Microsoft make.
