i think it's wonderful that celebrities are endorsing green ideals, you've got to ask yourself does the end justify the means? I am environmentlly aware and active, not just"pro-active" like most people and I am sick of hearing scientists tell me how the world is dying and they themsleves are scienttists ahs it ever occured to anyone how much resources is wasted on useless science, look at the hadron collidor! it's the celebiteies inhtis wordl who will make the difference, not the scientis who waste our taxes on telling us things we already know.

In answer to the poster speculating that Bloom's "green" home is his second or third, he only has the one that he bought a few years ago and supposedly has hardly lived in because of his schedule. As for the notion that adding energy efficient changes to an existing home is a "greenwash", I think that to the contrary, it is a valid example. Bloom may have a lot of money but most people don't have the cash to design and build a "green " house from the ground up. He encourages people to do little things like switching to energy efficient lightbulbs and cutting power to devices not in use-- things average people can realistically do that can make a significant difference if large numbers of people join in. The grand gesture of building a totally green home is probably less relevant than encouraging everyone to do what they can do.

maybe the REALLY "green" thing to do is move into a house that's already here and make it green. it would use far less of earth's resources--and that, after all, is the point--and would cost far less. But no, that wouldn't be cool.

yeah, but who's the architect behind this wonder house?

i think it is interesting that he mentions solar panels and low energy bulbs, but the stuff that will really save you energy in a house design are the passive solar aspects, specifically having the building and its windows oriented to take advantage of sunlight. also, other boring things like insulation and thermal mass make a huge difference.

I think that living Green is the only way. It actually started in the 60's with the back to landers. My husband and I built a Solar home 25 years ago, composted, etc. etc.. We need to teach our children to be earth conscious, and for those of us that have, can feel confident that we are making a difference as well as the Celebrities. So, cheers,
Orlando and "Teach Your Children Well."

In response to the comment about Al Gore's house, this is from CNN.com:

Gore defends energy saving efforts
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A day after actor Leonardo DiCaprio hailed Al Gore on the Oscar stage as a "inspirational leader in the fight against global warming," the former vice president was forced to respond to charges from a Tennessee organization that his home consumes significantly more energy than the national average .

The Tennessee Center for Policy Research charged Monday that Gore's "mansion" "consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year."

"The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh -- more than 20 times the national average," the group charged in a statement.

"Al Gore has to be willing to walk the walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use," the groups president Drew Johnson said in the statement.

But a spokesman for Gore quickly fired back Monday night, claiming, "The Gore's purchase all of their power through the local Green Powerswitch program -- it is 100 percent renewable power."

"In addition, they are in the midst of a renovation which includes installing solar panels on their home, which will enable them to use less power," Gore's spokeswoman Kalee Kreider said in a statement.

In the future, you might want to double check the information you get from "conservative policy groups". ;o)

Well, at least his efforts are more than what Al Gore has done. A conservative policy group in Al's home state of Tennessee found that Al's mansion and guest house used more electricity in the month of August alone than an average home uses in a year. Al apparently paid $30,000 for electricity and natural gas last year.
I think what Orlando Bloom is doing is admirable.
Could he do more? Absolutely, in no way are any of his actions more than greenwash. But the act of giving a homeless man change does not by itself feed the person, but the collective smaller deeds of a greater population make a difference when counted together.

I'm afraid it's true - a huge proportion of the population are addicted to celebrity gossip but couldn't give a monkeys what scientists (or any other intelligent expert) has to say... So if celebrities going green makes the difference, then that's the game we have to play. And as for him talking about energy-saving bulbs etc I'd guess he knows plenty more about green design than that, but if he mentions things that your gossip mag reader can lay hands on and as a result they make that "trendy" switch, then it's all good isn't it? And in his defence, I think the house in the UK will be his main home - he'll be over in the US primarily for filming, in which case he'll live wherever they're filming.

Doesn't this climate crisis deserve hearing many points of view from as many circles as possible in support of becoming more green? This comparison between the relative worth of the opinions of scientists versus celebrites seems way too trite when the subject matter is so important. Everyone's voice and action is called for, right?

And celebrity gossip?!?! There are zillions of celebrity gossip sites if you need that type of engagement. This site, I thought, was about highlighting the creative, thoughtful products and solutions for the most critical issue of our time. I mean, get a grip, Folks... the Earth is dying!

Now other articles are saying he and penelope are done. When were they actually confirmed as a couple? E news says they are a non couple and people mag says they were sitting close and whispering but not affectionate at teddy's. Then on people.dot. com it says that orlando is her new constant companion. Are you are you not a couple? star says he is going to spain when she is filming so he doesn't lose her and is afraid of a public split.
