Cashmere brand Oyuna [1] worked with designer Peter Marigold [2] to create an interpretation of the traditional Mongolian ger tent-house [3] (or yurt [4]) in an installation for the new exhibition space located at 4 Cromwell Place. The construction, fitted within a grand, double-fronted house opposite the V&A Museum [5], was part of renowned curator Jane Withers’ show for London’s Design Festival [6].

The display system was created from simple long metal frames. Abstract but recognizable repeating details suggest the silhouettes of men, women, or animals. Wooden planks were used to cast the metal frames and are etched with a Mongolian saying which translates as “the sky is always blue.”

Founded by Mongolian Oyuna Tserendorj [8] and Swiss-Ecuadorian-British David Bernasconi, Oyuna is clearly influenced by the nomadic Mongolian heritage. The ger is the most iconic object in Mongolia, and so it makes sense to showcase Oyuna’s “personal luxuries for a modern day nomad”; a cashmere travel throw, a shawl and a garment. Cashmere is a completely natural and renewable material, collected once a year by combing cashmere goats.
