Every year, tons of waste is borne out of packaging materials for most consumer goods, including designer furnishings and lighting fixtures that claim to be green products. While some companies spend tremendous amounts of research and development on designing less wasteful packaging, innovative designers such as David Gardener choose to go a step further and merge product and packaging design. Gardener’s Packaging:Lamp reduces production waste to negligible levels; the container in which electronic components are distributed becomes the body of the fixture upon assembly. Molded from paper pulp into a traditional desk lamp form, the packaging has a do-it-yourself quality that also evokes a well-known aesthetic, serving as its own advertisement. The Packaging:Lamp is a finalist in the Bright Ideas Lighting Design Competition – if you like it, vote for it here!
