Paula Artzen’s work was hanging beautifully in a dark room at the huge Eindhoven design event in an exhibition called MIX’D [7]. She usually finds inspiration in nature, like she did with her vulnerable yet powerful “Butterfly” [8] collection. For her latest work, she was inspired by the drawing on a book by German biologist and philosopher Ernst Haeckel — “Kunstformen der Natur” [9] – released back in 1904!

Haeckel’s [10] book is full of all sorts of detailed drawings of organisms from the natural world, including plants, birds and sea creatures. The designs are characterized by a strong symmetry and attention to detail, which can also be seen in Artzen’s brilliant designs [4]. For her latest work, this young Dutch designer opted for polypropylene, a material that is stronger and more durable than paper and can be recycled.

This petrolium-based material also gives off a softly glow that helps creating a whimsical atmosphere in the room making the organisms stand out and “float”. Thoughtfully conceived, these flat-pack lamps are easier to ship, thus reducing their environmental impact. A functional work of art that is beautiful and sustainable, Paula Artzen [4]’s new lamps brightened up Dutch Design Week.
