Gallery: Pedal-Powered Generators to I...

Still making plans for New Year’s Eve? Why not brave the crowds of Times Square and help generate the power needed to light up the famous new year’s numerals! Duracell has been running their Smart Power Lab complete with Power Rovers, which are stationary bikes that anyone can hop on to generate renewable energy that will be used when the ball drops on New Year’s Eve.

This is the second year running that the Power Rovers will be lighting up the numerals, and many VIPs and celebs have stopped by the Smart Power Lab to burn some calories and generate some Watts. The Power Rovers are high-tech stationary bikes that create energy with each push of the pedal that is then stored in batteries at the Duracell Battery Center. Then on Thursday night, as per tradition, the ball will drop and the 2010 LED lights will start blazing.

Details as to how much energy is needed for the 2010 numerals are sketchy and you’ll have to do the math yourself to figure out how long you’d need to bike, but we think it’s a great way to start off the New Year. If you can’t handle the crowds for the bike event, hop on the subway and head to Times Square now to help juice up the lights.

This is a such an excellent activity for families with kids. Teaching the new generation that renewable energy is here! How would your 2nd grader feel when he sees that the calories he put in the pedals was not lost but simply transformed into a something else?

  3. Everyone should have one at home, hook the kids video games up to it so the games only come on if they are peddling. Would solve a lot.

Or, maybe they could wire the machines at my local gym. All fitness goer would be powering the whole neighborhood :)
