As a key element to New Haven Connecticut’s Neighborhood Revitalization Campaign [2], Gateway Community College [3] is getting a new LEED-NC Gold certified campus [4] right in the center of the city. From the architecture firm of Perkins+Will [5], the campus was designed to encourage transparency, openness, identity and engagement. In addition to being LEED certified, the new structure also includes several architectural features designed to facilitate learning and collaboration among students and faculty. With it’s central location the collage is primed to play an important role in the educational, economic and workforce development initiatives in the Greater New Haven area [6].

Running along Church Street, Gateway Community College now occupies two city blocks, and totals 367,000 in square footage. The new campus is made up of two separate structures that are connected together by a light-filled linear atrium [8]. This “internal street” spans George Street, and is enclosed by a multi-story glass wall. Located at the end of the building, the college’s library is housed in a curved 3-story glass structure [9], intended to be a dramatic urban gesture, or “gateway” to the city.

Visible to the public, the school’s atrium has an interactive “learning wall [10].” This dynamic wall features interactive displays that engage the community by encouraging outsiders to look into the building and increases the social value of the college’s new home.

The interior of the building houses 90 general purpose classrooms, 22 computer labs, 10 meeting spaces, a library, cafeteria, bookstore, small business center, culinary arts center, health center, early learning center, administrative offices and day care center. Incorporated into the design, Gateway Community College’s new campus utilizes several sustainable strategies and technologies including photovoltaics [11], green roof systems [12] and solar hot water.

The new campus cost a total of $198 million, and will allow for an increase in enrollment of up to 50 percent. It was the largest construction project the state of Connecticut [13] has ever funded and is their first public building designed to be LEED-NC Gold certified [14]. As part of New Haven’s effort towards revitalization the new campus will enhance learning among the student body, increase community engagement, and set new standard for efficiency and sustainability within the public sector.
