A giant sphinx made of sugar has been drawing crowds to Brooklyn, but the installation is not as sweet as it may appear. The exhibit inside of the former Domino Sugar Factory was completed by artist Kara Walker, and features racially-charged visuals that force viewers to recall the sugar industry’s role in the oppression of plantation workers and acknowledge the modern-day slavery that still plagues the United States and other nations around the world.
