South Dakota meat processor Beef Products, Inc (BPI) has responded aggressively to reports earlier this year that exposed the stomach-churning contents of lean finely textured beef, also known as pink slime. ABC News’ coverage of the ammonia-treated meat byproduct—commonly used to make cheap burgers—provoked an outrage that massively reduced demand for BPI’s primary product, and forced the company to shutter three of their plants. Now the company has responded with a 263 page defamation suit against ABC News, demanding $1.2 billion in compensation for over “200 false, defamatory and disparaging statements in their reports and in social media postings.” Jeffrey Schneider, senior vice president of ABC News has responded that “The lawsuit is without merit. We will contest it vigorously.”
