Last week Pinwu became the first Chinese design team to win a Salone Satellite Design Report Award. Zhang Lei, Christoph John and Jovana Bogdanovic’s winning collection is made from natural and traditional materials such as sustainable bamboo paper, interpreted with a modern aesthetic.
The Pinwu team has spent two years researching their materials (which include bamboo, water, silkfloss, porcelain, and bamboo paper) to develop a collection of ten products. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world, which makes it a very sustainable choice. The Tié Chair is their second paper chair, which gives a nearly weightless material a stable form. The process was inspired by Yuhang aper umbrellas - the shell is made from irregularly shaped rice paper sheets, and the shape echoes the classic Chinese horseshoe-back armchair.
