Pirates are known as the booty-seeking swashbucklers of the high seas. Ninjas are the stealthy warriors, lurking in the shadows until the time is right. Traits of both these larger-than-life characters are featured in the new Pirate Ninja folding bike [2], also known as the Tern Eclipse X20 [3]. Designed as a full-size bicycle, the Eclipse X20 sheds the awkward configuration of most folding bikes for a sleek, nimble frame that will turn heads when cruising, and blow minds when folded.

Folding bikes are great for urban life, where both storage and subway space [5] come at a premium. The only problem is that the basic design of folding bikes hasn’t changed in several decades. Most feature a strange, squat appearance and tiny wheels. Thanks to gears and handlebars they’re still pretty unwieldy, even when folder. Such awkwardness is unbecoming a Pirate Ninja, so Tern decided to invent a more efficient mechanism.

N-Fold Technology results in a faster, and more compact fold. The design includes new frame and handlepost geometries and spins the front wheel by 180 degrees before the central fold, resulting in a package 40 mm (1.5”) shorter. Even though the Eclipse X20 is much larger when fully deployed, this technology are only slightly larger than the typical small wheel folding bicycle [6] when folded. According to the company, this new design also allows for much faster folding–10 seconds or less–which is very helpful when trying to board a bus at rush hour.
