Fans of human powered bi-peds in the City of Angels rejoice! The Los Angeles City Council just approved a plan calling for 1,680 miles of interconnected bikeways. The new undertaking will call for more than 200 miles of new bicycle routes added every five years, making it easier – and more importantly, safer – to peddle two wheels around a city that is infamously known for its automobile grid lock.

The money for the plan is being provided by Measure R, a 2008 sales tax that was put in place to support transportation projects throughout the entire county. In 2009, the City Council made plans to put at least 10% of the city’s share towards initiatives for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The new measure has been drawn-up by city planners and transportation experts, along with significant input from the Los Angeles Bike Coalition and the growing community of bicyclists in the city. The new path forms a central Backbone Bikeway Network making it a lot easier for individuals to shoot across town on two wheels.
