A new temporary community space made from shipping containers just popped-up in Detroit's Eastern Market, thanks to the last month's successful Kickstarter campaign. Designed in collaboration between the Eastern Market Coorporation and Detroit Collaborative Design Center, First Container is a prototype of the lobby for a larger boutique hotel and community space being constructed out of shipping containers just a few blocks away.
First Container is a Detroit-based project that will include an innovative boutique hotel, a co-working lab and public event spaces made from shipping containers. In order to demonstrate some of the content that will be featured in the development, the team built a small replica of the lobby, which offers free WiFi, comfortable areas for people to work and a small stage for public events. With the idea of using storytelling as a catalyst for community building and enagement, the project aims to foster creativity and provide a friendly space for travellers.Visitors will have the opportunity to play SpeedStory, an interactive game designed to connect people through stories.
First Container will remain open three to four days a week until October 2013, and it will later become a permanent part of the larger hotel. The entire project is scheduled for completion in spring 2014.
