Ruben der Kinderen’s eco-friendly benches and chairs can create the ultimate pop-up lounge practically anywhere you can carry them. A recent graduate of Design Academy Eindhoven, Kinderen focused his graduation project on perfecting transportable eco furniture. The primary material is ReBoard, a high-strength paper board substrate that is durable, ultra-lightweight, and 100% recyclable. Each piece in the series folds flat, making them easy to transport to outdoor concerts, parks, and just about anywhere you please!
ReBoard has an internal layer of fluted paper that gives it the strength of MDF, yet it’s more than 5x lighter in weight. It is also moisture resistant, making it a suitable material for temporary outdoor use. Because the outer layers of the board can be printed, Kinderen also imagines that his furniture could be used with adverts or artwork at concerts or festivals.
The cardboard furniture is designed with integrated slots for carrying handles – just fold it up, throw it under your arm, and move the party to a new location! These would also be great for use in your home as temporary seating for parties, since it can be stored flat when not in use.
The low weight of Kinderen’s furniture also means low shipping emissions. Independent testing showed that Reboard production emits 2 kg/m2, which is very low compared with other structural paper boards on the market. Because of the fluted core, the material usage is 80% less than solid, heavy structural boards, such as particle board or MDF.
Applause to Kinderen’s collection, and we hope to see some installations of his creative pop-up lounges in the future!
