Porsche Confirms Plan to Develop All-Electric Vehicles

Sports car manufacturers have been lining up left and right to bring their own brand of electric vehicles to the market, so it comes as no surprise that Porsche is finally joining in with a few experimental EVs of its own. This week the carmaker announced its plan to develop an all-electric sports car, starting with a field-test of three electric Boxsters.

While great news for the environmentally concerned auto-enthusiast, there’s just one catch: field tests won’t begin until 2011. This means it will probably be awhile before we actually see an electric Boxster cruising the city streets.  But Michael Macht, President and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche AG, assures us, “We will definitely be offering an electric sports car in future. But such a concept only makes sense if it offers product qualities typical of a Porsche.”

We’ll be watching to see if Porsche follows through on its all-electric promises, but in the meantime, the company is working on a number of hybrids, including the 911 GT3 R hybrid, the Cayenne hybrid and the ultra-slick Porsche 918 Spyder concept vehicle.

I hope that whatever Porsche comes up with, it is more along the lines of the GM Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Equinox. That SUV has scary good acceleration. All electric, but without the massive battery weight and the long charging time of an all-battery EV. http://organicconnectmag.com/wp/2010/07/the-zero-emission-hydrogen-fueled-chevy/

Most manufacturers do not make electric cars because current battery technology means they make a range of only 100 miles. The “will it make it?” factor known as range anxiety puts off customers
