Earlier this year we told you all about the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid concept car and now we get to tell you — as we so rarely get to do — that this concept car is about to become a reality! The Spyder which is surely to become the sexiest green car ever (sorry Tesla!) just got the green light to make this dream a real road eating machine. Porsche’s first ever plug-in hybrid goes from 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, gets 94 miles per gallon, and undoubtedly will have most of us drooling as it zips past us on our daily commutes. But why will we be drooling instead of riding inside, you ask? The price tag for the 918 Spyder is set at a whopping US $630,000!
“Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts,” said after the announcement this week by Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG. Porsche’s release of this news was wholly underscored and stressed by the point that this car is no sally-slow-poke hybrid family mover – this thing can run.
The hefty price tag for the Spyder comes in part due of its nifty driving options. The car will feature a series of driving modes: E-Drive, Hybrid, Sport Hybrid and Race Hybrid. The Race Hybrid is apparently the top-speed mode, and though it’s likely the most fun, it’s also nice to know you can offset that by running the car completely on electricity in the E-Drive mode. But the car’s major zip comes from a 3.4L mid-mounted V8 hitting 500-hp, and the engine is coupled with two electric motors that give it an extra 218-hp. Sounds like some heft to us! And with a price tag to match, this limited-release beauty will be a barrel of green fun for the few heavy hitters that will get to call it their own.

I think the Porsche Design bicycle is a more sexy green sports vehicle and costs about $625,000 less, which makes it a pretty damned expensive bike but a relative bargin compared to this CO2 spewing clunker.
Hybrid is not Green unless the ICE is hydrogen powered.
