As part of the Yankee Stadium Redevelopment Project, the Power House Building received a green roof and LEED Gold renovation [2], turning it into a mixed-use and energy-efficient facility. Located in Mill Pond Park [3] along the Harlem River, the Power House Building originally supported the food refrigeration warehouse at the Bronx Terminal Market, but now holds locker rooms, a cafe and tennis clubhouse for the new park facilities. On December 20th, NYC Parks & Recreation [4] announced that the renovated facility received LEED Gold certification, which awarded their energy and water efficient strategies as well as a fancy new green roof [5].

The Power House Building was constructed in the early 1800s and was originally used to provide power [7] for milling purposes. Over the years it was transformed to provide refrigeration at the Bronx Terminal Market, eventually falling to disuse. Now the 25,800 sq ft Power House Building will serve as multi-purpose facility [8] for the 10-acre Mill Pond Park, housing offices, an indoor café, tennis clubhouse, locker room, and 12,500 square feet of space dedicated to public programming.

Last year, the building went through a major ($13.7 million) overhaul and was recently awarded with a LEED Gold certification. The early 1800s facility now includes a beautiful green roof [9], and native vegetation around the site helps with storm water infiltration. Over 80% of the existing building was retained and recycled materials, as well as FSC-certified wood, was used in the reconstruction. Energy efficient appliances, systems and lighting were installed in addition to water efficient fixtures.
