Gallery: LEED Certified Forest City Opens This Week in SF’s Presidio

A series of officer's homes have been remade into duplexes and townhomes: this is the dining room for one such unit. Despite years of neglect and some buckling due to weather, the contractors were able to restore the original hardwood floors.

The Presidio is a kind of unique beast: once an army base, now a national park. Its managing foundation, The Presidio Trust, has been federally funded since its inception, but that funding has decreased yearly as part of a plan to make the foundation financially self-sufficient. The result is large residential projects like this neighborhood, where the expected rental income will pay the park’s operating costs. Check out the photos for an interesting look at what happens when history, sustainable building, our military past and high-end living meet.
