On September 25th, the first LEED Certified neighborhood in San Francisco will open in the Presidio National Park. The project's crowning piece is a former public hospital that has been transformed into a 154-apartment building, and the neighborhood also includes townhomes and duplexes that maintain a cozy relationship with some neighboring trees. We recently had a chance to see this incredible project firsthand as part of San Francisco's Arch + City festival - read on for an exclusive look!
The Presidio is a kind of unique beast: once an army base, now a national park. Its managing foundation, The Presidio Trust , has been federally funded since its inception, but that funding has decreased yearly as part of a plan to make the foundation financially self-sufficient. The result is large residential projects like this neighborhood, where the expected rental income will pay the park’s operating costs. Check out the photos for an interesting look at what happens when history, sustainable building, our military past and high-end living meet.
