Located in the small town of Tenancingo in the State of Mexico (about 150 kilometers southwest of Mexico City), Probiomed is a medical research and production facility that produces biomedical products, like vaccines and pharmaceuticals. The company works to source their raw materials from within Mexico and produce enough product to meet the demand of their own country before exporting the surplus. Grupo de Diseno Urbano , a Mexico City-based firm, was in charge of the design for the entire facility, including the master plan, the architecture of the buildings and the landscape architecture.
The first component completed in the campus was the actual plant to produce the biomedical products, and since that was built they have also completed the corporate dining hall for employees and executives. Located on top of a slope in an old avocado orchard, the dining hall is situated to capture natural daylight with the roof sloped up to the north to take in the view of the mountains and protect from the southern sun. This sloping roof allows for the collection of rainwater, which is then sent to an adjacent cistern. This aquatic landscape creates a cool microclimate for employees to enjoy and relax in. Additionally, cross ventilation strategies and operable windows allow for natural, low-energy cooling.
