Gallery: Protean In-Wheel Motors Could Up Hybrid Efficiency By 300 Perc...

Many electric concept cars feature in-wheel electric motors to move them down the road, but only recently have they truly proven themselves as the greenest way to move future hybrid vehicles. A Vauxhall Vivaro diesel hybrid equipped with Protean’s electric in-wheel motors recently showed a 300 percent fuel economy improvement in hybrid mode, showing that there really is something to these bad boys.

Wait, so are they saying that current hybrids are, at best, 25% efficient, even in EV mode?

The figures here are a bit iffy.

If instead the claim is that they ran a normal Vivaro and a hybrid-boosted one through a normal euro fuel consumption test schema and the latter was 3x more frugal, then DUHHHHHH.

Though that in itself is rather debateable with commercial vehicle diesel motors being in the 30-40 percent chemical-to-kinetic energy conversion efficiency range… If the source electricity came from some kind of futuristic 99% efficient diesel turbine generator, then the electric motors + drive electronics + charge system would still be managing a minimum 90 (and max 120!) percent themselves.
