Public Bike Sharing: Progress and Challenges Ahead

by , 10/06/09

On the chic streets of Paris, a woman wearing a purple cardigan zooms by on a chunky, mocha-grey bicycle. The woman fades from mind, but the retro bike lingers on as a memory with its decidedly unique styling. Strangely, an older gentleman with a bouquet of flowers tucked into his bag now rides by on a bike that looks just like the last one. And now, yet another man is walking the exact same bike down the street too. Coincidence, or something more?

Yes, vandalism is the main problem of the Velib system. We also have issues with flat tires, broken forks and so on. Some people say the Vélib bike is way too heavy, and i think it’s ok if you don’t plan to ride for hours.

I don’t know if vandalism and disrespect is something typical of french people but it’s so annoying and frustrating.

There are 20 000 Vélib bike in Paris. Last year 7200 have been stolen and 11 600 have suffered vandalism. That’s incredible.

Berlin has a bike sharing system in which the user may return the bike by just leaving it anywhere in the city. The user then phones in saying where he left the bike. Quite interesting :)

I first saw this idea in place in Taipei, Taiwan when i visited. The difference between there and places further west is they tend to be a more respectful culture so things like vandalism and theft are rare from what I understood.

Surprising to note information on Vandalism in European countries like Paris. People in the developing countries always believe that the last thing to happen in any of the European coutry / City, is vandalism. Looks like human is human, whether in developing country or developed country. Meanwhile, similar but different, system is being implemented in Mumbai, city in India.
