R-House, designed by Della Valle Bernheimer and Architecture Research Office, is a cozy looking home that meets Passive House standards for energy efficiency and serves as a model for sustainable and affordable residential design. As a winner of Syracuse University’s “From the Ground Up” competition, the house is intended to help revitalize a blighted neighborhood in Syracuse, NY. Designed for economical and practical performance, the house has an extremely well-insulated and airtight exterior, an efficient re-circulating heating and ventilation system, and high performance windows that optimize solar gain. R-House is a significant opportunity to demonstrate a successful application of innovative building strategies in a cold climate.
