A massive storm system unleashed rare winter twisters [1] on Christmas day – and now it’s heading for the northeast, NPR reports [2]. After pummeling America’s midsection with torrential rain and snow, the storm dumped on the deep south before plowing through the Carolinas. The winter system has already forced at least 500 flight cancellations as it makes its way towards the country’s northeast corridor [3].

Travelers who were planning to head home after the holiday might face delays as the winter storm that ripped through several states yesterday continues up the northeast corridor. On Christmas day [4], three deaths and a slew of injuries were reported as the storm unleashed a series of destructive tornadoes on Alabama and Louisiana. Approximately 100,000 people lost power for a time.

“Mobile was the biggest city hit by the rare winter twisters, NPR reports [2]. “Along with brutal, straight-line winds, the storms knocked down countless trees, blew the roofs off homes and left many Christmas celebrations in the dark. Torrential rains drenched the region and several places saw flash flooding [5].”

Approximately 250 flights heading in and out of the Dallas/Forth Worth International Airport were cancelled yesterday as a few inches of snow [6] fell on the region and further delays are expected today at airports within the storm’s path.
