Office furniture often gets sent to die in a dark, damp landfill, where it remains for much longer than we care to admit. It tends to be cheap, molded, made from particle board and sometimes includes formaldehyde. Since we can’t unmake these items, the next best thing is to recycle them into useful pieces of eco-furniture [2], just like Naomi Dean [3] does. Dean is a UK-based furniture designer who finds inspiration in smart design and cast-off items like unwanted office furniture.

Dean won Young Furniture Designer of the Year in 2005 for her efficient and compact wardrobe [4], which was inspired by city living. Her newest designs include a coffee table [5] and desk, both of which showcase her smart approach towards eco-friendly design. The Spin Table is constructed from reclaimed office furniture and transformed into a movable storage space. By placing two next to each other you can make a multifunctional coffee table.

The Tiny Footprint Desk is a compact work area that acts as both writing desk [6] and laptop work station. The hinged lid raises and lowers to reveal or hide a space beneath that holds a labtop and books. Two storage boxes made from off-cuts of FSC certified solid timber fit snugly into the back to hold pens, pencils and other small items. The cork board cut into the lid was produced from environmentally friendly cork.

All the packaging used for these pieces is made from recycled materials [7] and is either fully recyclable or biodegradable. Dean is currently working on a new line of furniture made from timber salvaged from scaffolding boards.
