Companies like Tesla are hard at work trying to take the auto industry away from Detroit and Japan. But the Renault-Nissan alliance is bringing the fight to Silicon Valley in order to stay on the leading edge of green transportation going forward. The companies are opening a green technology research center in the heart of Silicon Valley, right across the street from Google’s headquarters in Mountain View.

In a press release, Nissan said the company would “build staff organically, to focus on specific projects and business developments as they emerge.” Renault and Nissan are committing $5.4 billion to sustainable transportation development over the next few years, and this new office will play a large role in helping keep the automakers at the leading edge of vehicle IT research, including smart grid tech, user interface displays, vehicle connectivity, and more. Welcome to the Valley, auto industry.
