by , 09/15/06

dwell on design, prefab, colin davies, history

The first morning of Dwell on Design has just wrapped up, and as luck would have it on, on Prefab Friday, the morning session was all about prefab. The architect lineup included Linda Taalman and Alan Koch of the iThouse, Rocio Romero, known for LV and Fish Camp; Christopher Deam, and Joe Tanney of Resolution: 4 Architecture; plus two profs from the MIT school of Architecture, Joel Turkel and Larry Sass, and prefab historian/author, Colin Davies (shown lecturing above).

3.5 hours of non-stop prefab conversation can hardly be summed up concisely here, but here are some highlights and themes:

I was also at the conference today, and i first have to say that i found the prefab panel to be by far the more interesting of the day’s discussions. The projects shown were undeniably beautiful, and when presented, seemed like the perfect solution to all of today’s housing problems. But then, as you mention, there’s the cost issue. The elephant in the room. Although the designers did mention regulations and bureaucracy, i feel like they were really just expertly avoiding the issue. It would’ve been nice to see a cost breakdown from someone. I was also hoping for a discussion on the possibility of large-scale modern prefab residential developments and the effect such a development might have on the industry as whole. Alas, it wasn’t to be today…

more on this when i sober up and get a chance to clear my head! fun day, overall!
maybe i’ll run into you tomorrow!

do any of these prefabs come with solar power or is that something you add as an after market plus?

also i never saw any answers on whether this can withstand terribly cold climates?

Please advise if co-op opportunities exist to construct a model home. I have land available near Buttonwillow, CA (Southern CA), Grants, NM (US Continental Divide) and Sunsite, AZ 60 miles north of Bizbee, AZ). Please advise, as I love the design and would welcome an opportunity to own one.
