Chile-based DX Arquitectos stacked up a series of repurposed shipping containers to create cool prefab offices and showrooms for Muebles Gacitúa´s furniture lines. The modular units were a snap to set up, and they provide shelter and buffer noise from the busy nearby roads.

Located next to Santiago´s very busy Santa Rosa road in the San Miguel area, this group of shipping containers serves as Muebles Gacitúa´s central hub. The containers were once used to ship products from one end to the world to another, but now they serve to exhibit the furnitures company’s many designs. The unique prefab buildings are still painted a rusty red color washed out by the sea and sun, and they feature green patios and long terraces.

DX Arquitectos turned the corrugated boxes into habitable shelters by adding recycled aluminum windows, sliding glass doors, rubber floors, wood panelling and insulation. Measuring a total of 505 square feet, the project brings some color and recycled aesthetics to the area. We’re happy to see the cargotecture trend sweep South America as more and more architects discover new uses for the prefab modular units.
