The latest from design competition leaders Urban Re:Vision, Re:Vision Dallas is a newly-launched design competition that’s not just an ideas contest, but a real urban project. The City of Dallas is asking for designers, architects, students, engineers and planners to look particularly at one city block in Dallas right across the street from the City Hall, envision the most sustainable city block ever, and draw up the plans. Winners will receive a cash prize and a chance to sell the idea to the developer, Central Dallas CDC, to eventually be built.
The project isn’t just a pipe dream, but a reality, as the land for this project has already been bought and approved of and the Mayor of Dallas has given his blessing. Project sponsors are asking for groups to create and plan the most sustainable city block possible given the context of its surroundings and various requirements on the part of the city. The main goal is to go beyond the traditional ideas, but still produce an idea can be built within a budget.
Residential density should be around 200 units, with some low income housing. Space must also be available for retail/commercial, and educational component, a health care or wellness facility and specific requirements for parking and transportation. Other goals for the project include a LEED-ND rating, carbon neutrality, zero waste water and no run-off, as well as 75% reduction of construction waste.
Registration for the Re:Vision Dallas competition has been open since January. If you’re interested in being part of this competition, registration closes April 15th, and final submissions are due by May 8, 2009 at 11:59 PST. Three finalists will each receive a cash prize of $25,000 each and have the chance to propose their plan and ideas to the developer. Three prizes for Honorable Mention will also be awarded $1,000 each.
