Former Senator Rick Santorum [1] said yesterday that he thinks President Obama “elevates the Earth above man,” [2] and should rethink his dedication to “radical environmentalists.” Santorum has recently come into the political spotlight thanks to his steady rise up the Republican primary ladder over the past few weeks. This past weekend Santorum was accused of questioning President Barack Obama’s religion at a campaign stop in Ohio. When asked about his statement the following day on Face the Nation [3], Santorum explained that he wasn’t questioning the President’s religion but rather his dedication to the human race. It seems Santorum might have forgotten that without the Earth, there is no human race and that perhaps the President is just trying to take good care of this big blue planet we call home.

We’re not sure what Santorum is talking about [2], and we’re inclined to think that neither does he. “I just said that when you have a worldview that elevates the Earth above man and says that, you know, we can’t take those resources because we’re going to harm the Earth by things that frankly are just not scientifically proven — for example, that politicization of the whole global-warming debate — I mean, this is just all an attempt to centralize power and to give more power to the government,” he said.

We’re pretty sure that it has been proven, scientifically, that natural resources are finite. So if there is only a limited amount of them and if we rely on them for our daily livelihood, it might then be a good idea to lay off using them and find something else more sustainable — say what those “radical environmentalists” call renewable energy — in order to keep the human race from perishing.

“This idea that man is here to serve the earth, as opposed to husband its resources and being good stewards of the earth, and I think that is a phony ideal,” Santorum continued. If Santorum thinks our current state of resource husbandry is good stewardship, he is the one pushing phony ideals. Our reliance on shipping has polluted the world’s oceans, in some cases making them uninhabitable [4] to fish that we eat; coal mining [5] has chopped thousands of mountains in half and has polluted the water that we drink; oil pipelines have decimated habitats of animals that we hunt for sustenance; the timber industry has deforested millions of acres of rainforest causing the changing of weather patterns [6] that allow agriculture to exist; the extraction of rare Earth minerals [7] from underground has caused the destruction of entire communities of people in developing countries; and our desperation to extract and burn fossil fuels has caused millions — maybe billions — of people to fall ill [8] from breathing toxic emissions.

Rick Santorum seems to forget that humans wouldn’t be here without this planet and the life-giving qualities it was born with. President Obama — though sometimes he gets off track [9] — is just trying to keep this place hospitable and perhaps Sen. Santorum should go find his own planet to husband — and perhaps learn a little bit about how to get rid of Google search results. [10]
