Rock Restaurant is a Tropical Culinary Dream Perched in the Middle of the Ocean

The amazing Rock Restaurant [6] in Zanzibar is a rustic hut situated on a jagged rock that rises above the Indian Ocean. Located off the shore of Michanwi Pingwe [7], the secluded eatery invites guests to wade, swim, or boat over to enjoy the catch of the day, local spirits, and breathtaking scenery. This unique little beach bungalow is virtually off the map and known to very few. Besides its exclusivity, the best part is that there is not a bad seat in the house.

The restaurant itself can accomodate 14 people and includes a beautiful wrap-around terrace boasting panoramic views of turquoise water [9]. Built entirely with rustic, local materials, the structure easily adapts to the ever changing nature of its environment. When the tide [10] is low, an amazing tiered staircase greets visitors, leading them to the main dining room. Higher tides that call for a boat ride to the Rock, allow visitors to tie up or get dropped off at the floating oasis.

The owner, a local fisherman, serves whatever he catches (including lobster and prawns [11]) and prepares delicious authentic recipes with local ingredients. The cozy hut also offers an extensive wine menu, making it a hot spot for romantic dinners and special occasions. A once in a lifetime experience in itself, dinner at the Rock is a must for anyone traveling the Tanzanian [12] coast.
