Rocky Mountain Bank Rocks Sustainable Features in Beautiful Jackson, Wyoming

It may be an overstatement to say that financial institutions around the globe are "going green," but there does appear to be a growing trend of new banks that are designed with sustainability in mind. Plan One Architects ^[6] is one of many firms pushing their clients to invest in energy efficiency, material restraint, and other strategies that lessen the environmental impact of new builds. One of their most recent projects, the Rocky Mountain Bank ^[7] in Jackson, Wyoming, demonstrates that sustainable design can be sexy too.

The bank occupies an oblique corner site in a very visible part of Jackson, Wyoming. Its bold and sweeping curvilinear form is accentuated by natural building materials ^[8] such as stone and a latticed vertical “exoskeleton.” Organized around a central hearth, the building’s program prioritizes a powerful connection between the spectacular mountain landscape and the interior spaces.

Superior insulation ensures that the building doesn’t leak energy, while passive solar design ^[9] and overhangs provide just enough solar gain to keep the interior comfortable during winter months without roasting the place during hotter summer days. Both daylighting and views are achieved with extensive glazing, and energy-efficient mechanical systems ^[10] slash the building’s overall consumption.
