Gallery: Roel de Boer Imagines a Utopian City Filled with Treehouse Pod...

“Imagine a tree house that is reduced to the essentials. A place to sit and a place to sleep (…) This is the place where I want to nest.” Comments the designer.

Roel De Boer imagines a city full of treehouse pods instead of high-rise apartment buildings. It might not be particularly realistic, but it’s a fun thought experiment. “Imagine a treehouse that is reduced to the essentials,” writes the designer. “A place to sit and a place to sleep … this is the place where I want to nest.”

Under the concept outlined by de Boer, people could share more things and services with others, owning fewer objects and creating a more social place to live. Businesses like restaurants, teahouses, cinemas, saunas or libraries could fill other needs. The designer doesn’t get into the nuts and bolts of how to construct his treehouse pods, but it looks that will be an inflatable mould shaped around the tree, covered with a waterproof mix of recycled cardboard.
